Marine Engineering Department

About the Department

The department of marine engineering was also established in 2002.Currently,it offers a bachelor degree of marine engineering. It is the 5 years programme. (60) students are admitted every year. At present 335 marine engineering students are attending in Myanmar Maritime University. The facilities and services such as engine room simulator lab, eddy current break dynamometer lab, refrigeration and air condition lab, fluid mechanic lab, Machinery lab, library, computer lab ,workshop, medical services are administrated by the university.

The course is designed to cover the basic knowledge and training required by those who are seeking to become Engine Officers. Fundamental subjects are based on the minimum requirements for certification of officer in charge of the Engineering watch on ship of 750 kW and above propulsion power, as set out in the table A-III/1 of STCW Code of the Convention.

During five years of study period, all students of Marine Engineering specialization are required to attend workshop skill training, on works suitable for training of a marine engineer. Not less than six months of this period should have been devoted to fitting, erecting or repairing machinery. The workshop services must be entered in the workshop service record book and signed by the responsible Officials.

Aims and Objectives

This study program aims to produce the skillful marine engineers for Ocean Going Merchant Vessels, Ship Management, Maritime Education and Training Institute, Maritime Equipment Manufacturing Industry and Shipyard.

Quality Objectives

Intellectual Skills (Knowledge)

After completion of the programme, a student will be able to:

  • Understand the capabilities of computer based and experimental methods for problem solving.
  • Develop, model and analyze marine engineering and management systems, processes and products using scientific principle.
  • Integrate knowledge of mathematics, science, computer technology, design and engineering practice to solve a wide range of problems in the subject applying understanding to challenging solutions.

Specific Skills (Understanding)

After completion of the programme, a student will be able to:

  • Use appropriate mathematical and computational techniques for simulating and analyzing marine specific problems.
  • Design sustainable marine systems, components or processes with technical analysis and critical evaluation results.
  • Effectively use learning resources for independent research.

Specific Skills (Understanding)

After completion of the programme, a student will be able to:

  • Communicate confidently and effectively in oral and written forms with the aid of standard information technology systems.
  • Employ a systematic approach to gathering, analyzing, and communicating knowledge.
  • Undertake lifelong learning, particularly for continuing professional development.
